There has been a resurgence of interest in ancient Japanese history. Recently the Emperor NINTOKU’s grave in Sakai city ( Osaka Prefecture ) has just attained a World Heritage Status and has been the focus of many TV documentaries.
Tatsuo Tajima’s ANCIENT CUP is a reflection on this romantic time period. This piece is a well balanced sitter wrapped with radiating groves to keep the pipe cool when dealing with hot tobacco. The pipe has been gently sandblasted giving it a rustic look of old pottery. The thick rim is polished smooth displaying beautiful tight birdseye grain. From a distance the pipe has the silhouette of an old oil lamp. The unique shape and texture brings one a feeling of a nostalgic time from long ago.
